BMW 330i
258bhp and 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds are not figures to sneeze at,
but the tangible shove in your back says the engine is brawny enough
to back them up. Indeed, the honeyed tones of the engine, the instant-torque
responsiveness and ability to feel as unruffled at 7,000rpm as it
does at 2,000rpm are probably the aspects of the 330i that
crystallize everything BMW does best.
Anyone who has ever had a poster of a car on his wall would, in
fact, be highly likely to judge the premium for the 330i
over a 320i well spent for the noise alone, for - good as the latter
car is - as far as how much joy you can expect to extract from a 3
Series is concerned, life begins at 30.
If you can afford to buy, buy with the confidence that you're
getting not just the absolute best car in the class, but also one of
the finest automobiles ever conceived.

BMW 520d This is the most sensible 5-series you can buy - good
drivability, performance and fuel economy - and even a better overall
car than the 525i. Refinement? Let's put it this way: if you badge the 520d as 525i and
we just get in and drive away, we wouldn't have known it's a diesel
until we step outside it with the engine running.
This kind of performance is testament to a good modern diesel engine:
good drivability, refinement and fuel economy. The driving characteristics are not compromised at all.
The four-cylinder 520d weighs exactly the same as the six-cylinder
525i and its handling is identical: substantially poised, agile and
stable. It may be not as sharp as the 530i, but no other exec car this size
is as dynamically pleasing to drive.
The lack of run-flat tyres is the only apparent cost-cutting on this
car, but it thankfully improves the ride comfort by a notch.
It's hard to find real fault with the car. |

Mercedes Benz S320L CDI
The quality of interior trimmings is excellent. The S-class comes with all kinds of airbags, and features the latest in braking electronics.
The brakes are powerful.
Competitive vice under the B8m front -
where long wheelbase versions of the Audi A8, Lexus LS460
and Jaguar XJ8 are not part of the cast - the S320L CDI is
showing the way forward. Aside the class-leading levels of interior comfort, the
diesel S-class has the real-world pace and frugality to make
it a better bet than the fully imported S350L and even
S500L.
And crucially, the S320L CDI makes its opponents
virtually redundant, not to mention the other three that
cost substantially more due to no Thai assembly policy. The
S320L CDI is the luxury saloon to beat at the moment, at
such a price level and at such a customer target. |
